When my daughter, Meredith, passed away, I was heartbroken — not only because of the pain and grief that settled in my heart from the devastating loss, but also because my granddaughter, Emma, was left without a mother.
Emma’s dad, Cole remarried shortly after. His new wife, Bethany, seemed like a nice person at first, but sadly, she turned out to be a mean woman who didn’t care about Emma at all.
Being well-off, I agreed to cover most of the expenses regarding Emma’s education. In fact, I was there for anything she needed, and that included toys, clothes, you name it.
One day, I got a call from Bethany asking for $1,000 for a Dreamhouse toy Emma wanted. I sent the money right away, along with a sapphire earrings.
A couple of days passed by and I didn’t receive a call from Emma to thank me for the gift. When I was finally able to reach her out, she told me she had never got a Dreamhouse toy. However, she did mention her stepmom having new earrings.
Emma also asked why I stopped sending her money and gifts. “Is it because you don’t love me anymore?” she asked with a crying voice.
My heart broke. It was then that I realized that most, if not all, of the money and the gifts I was sending never reached my granddaughter.
When I asked Cole about it, he said I never sent anything. He accused me of lying and told me I was selfish for not keeping the promise of helping him and my granddaughter financially.
When Emma’s birthday approach, I decided to see her, but Bethany said they were going on holiday that weekend. She was doing all in her power to keep me out of Emma’s life while using my money.
Worried for my granddaughter, I bought a ticket and appeared at their home unannounced. I had a bunch of receipts from everything I had purchased for my granddaughter during the time Bethany and Cole were married.
When Bethany opened the door, she was shocked.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, trying to prevent me from speaking to Emma and Cole, but I managed to get inside.
The place wasn’t decorated. No balloons, no cake, no new clothes for Emma. It was as though it was just an ordinary day, not her birthday.
I confronted Bethany in front of Cole, who still refused to believe that it was his wife who lied to him, not me.
When I showed him the bank statement of all the transactions I made in the past six months, he was shocked.
Bethany tried to defend herself, but there was nothing she could do.
She was trapped in the web of her own lies.
